Reliability, Maintainability, Safety & Hazards Engineer - Rail Systems - Sacramento, CA
Position Overview:
The Reliability, Maintenance, Safety & Hazards Engineer manager the reliability and safety aspects of all our rail vehicle contracts (program plans, targets to be included in supplier specifications, input into the design through participation in design reviews, compilation of reliability and safety analyses for submittal to customer, reliability demonstration programs, etc). The RMS Engineer will ensure systems are in place to assess the reliability of our products in the field, both at the vehicle and component level, and must have the self-motivated and persuasive nature necessary to drive required investigations and corrective actions to improve the reliability of our vehicles. Other responsibilities include maintenance plans and life cycle costing.
The RMS Engineer needs to have a good knowledge of reliability and safety analysis techniques, as well as a broad appreciation of the technology we use on our rail vehicles (which includes microprocessor controlled systems, hardwired relay logic, electro-mechanical equipment, power electronics, hydraulics, and mechanical equipment). To be effective, the RMS engineer needs to be able to gain a good knowledge of the rail vehicle as a system. The RMS engineer will work closely with the system engineers to gain this knowledge and apply reliability and safety analysis techniques appropriately.
This position requires a reliability and safety specialist who also has a broad knowledge of engineering principles. Knowledge of the rail industry would be an advantage but is not essential.
Responsibilities:
• Defines requirements and prepares program plans for RMS tasks. • Provides RMS input to designs to ensure requirements are addressed in the vehicle design and operating/maintenance procedures. • Prepares and/or manages the preparation by others of RMS analyses which include FMECA, Reliability and Maintainability predictions, Hazard Analysis, and Fault Tree Analysis that is documented by preparing reports, charts, graphs, and other documents. • Communicates RMS requirements to our suppliers. • Compiles RMS documentation, submits to customer and responds to their feedback. • Runs and maintains a system that ensures the feedback of experience from vehicle operation into the design by applying suitable analysis techniques to reliability data from site. • May supervise lower-level engineers.
Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:
• Required education: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering • Required experience: 5 or more years RMSH experience in transportation industry or related experience and/or training. • Required travel: none • Additional requirements: o Must be able to perform all tasks with minimal supervision or coaching. o Proven experience completing responsibilities outlined above. o Detailed knowledge of RMS-related topics including predictions, allocations, FMECA, relevant MIL-STDs, Life Cycle Cost, safety analysis (preliminary, fault tree, fault hazards, operating, and interface hazards), reliability demonstrations and failure review boards. o Knowledge of the electrical and mechanical equipment typically installed on railway vehicles in order to apply this knowledge to an in-depth RMSH analysis of the components, the interfaces between these components and the overall vehicle.”
