Instrumental is looking for an experienced developer to join our team of 10 in Palo Alto as our first DevOps engineer.

On our team, you will work with senior developers to build a distributed data pipeline between our AWS infrastructure and the factories of the world. Your automation will power software running on assembly lines for the most desirable and confidential consumer electronic products. It will deliver software to factories in China, the USA, Mexico, and anywhere else on Earth that things are made. You will transition a service running 10s of instances in 3 continents to one running hundreds of instances in all continents.

Does bulletproofing a distributed service like that sound like an interesting problem to you? If so, let’s solve it together.

What you’ll do: -Design processes for provisioning, releasing, managing, and monitoring our distributed factory hardware and services -Provision and manage our factory hardware and services infrastructure using the tooling and processes that you develop -Innovate creative workarounds against privately or publicly enforced traffic shaping programs-Report and troubleshoot problems with our distributed factory services, and collaborate on issues with developers -Build dashboards and alerts around critical metrics for our factory services -Develop internal tools and provision in-house infrastructure to aid in image and data analysis efforts -Help our team transition the distributed factory services from Windows to Linux -Found our company’s DevOps team

We’re looking for someone who: -Has multiple years hands-on experience administering Linux, preferably with distributed systems. You should have compiled your own kernel at some point, know how to trace syscalls, understand TCP, etc -Has a relentless desire to automate and build software tools -Knows how to debug remote systems and secure them -Has experience implementing safe remote-patching processes -Is comfortable writing software to automate API-driven tasks at scale -Has experience with AWS (1+ years), some Infrastructure-as-code tool (preferably Terraform), and Windows scripting (don’t worry – we are currently transitioning off of Windows) -Can communicate complex ideas effectively with technical and non-technical people -Is good at thinking out loud, difficult to frustrate, and fun to work with -Extra points if you have experience building and deploying custom hardware
