We are running a rolling campaign, there are a number of teams available to join all within our Data, Digital and Technology groups.

We are looking for someone to build out, run and improve our infrastructure services, which includes our mission critical service GOV.UK. The role will also involve supporting our increasing number of platforms that aim to ease and improve the development of citizen facing services, some of which include GOV.UK Notify, GOV.UK Verify and GOV.UK Pay.

With you supporting and managing our varied technology stacks, we can focus on transforming services across government to meet user needs. You will have the opportunity to move between our projects, ensuring the infrastructure in each is secure, available, maintainable and scalable.

A passion for technology and efficiency is essential to this role. You will be keen to work closely with developers, sharing responsibility with them for operational support (in and out of hours). You will be comfortable using cloud services running Linux and familiar with approaches such as infrastructure as code, continuous deployment, and agile development.

This is also an opportunity to participate in the growing web operations community within government while working amongst an excellent peer group.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • collaborating closely with colleagues in order to meet users’ needs
  • debugging a complex, multi-server service in a high availability environment
  • using languages such as Ruby, Python, Go, and Java within an existing, production codebase
  • using configuration management tools such as Puppet, chef, Ansible, Salt, etc.
  • administering common open source databases like MySQL, Postgres, MongoDB etc.
  • familiarity with network protocols – TCP/IP, HTTP, TLS, etc.
  • understanding of application deployment strategies, continuous integration and version control
  • comfortable with automated testing
  • Building and configuring new server platforms and the automated tooling to do so
  • Operational management of Linux servers, delivering a complex web application stack
