We’re looking for a Systems Engineer to join our team of 3. The role has a variety of responsibilities and will evolve as the business grows, but will include: 

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Maintenance and development of our entire estate of Linux and Windows hosts, VMs and containers, networking devices, databases and storage solutions
  • Provide support for issues and user requests across all our technologies 
  • Proactively deal with monitoring alerts and help to develop the monitoring platform 
  • Contribute to the development of configuration management  and automate routine tasks
  • Carry out project work across all aspects of the infrastructure and IT systems
  • Learn, trial and implement new technologies
  • Implement and adhere to system and network security
  • Identify and drive best practice standards, with a focus on Open Source offerings where feasible
  • Solid understanding of and practical experience with Linux, preferably Ubuntu or other Debian-based distributions
  • Experience with configuration management (ideally Puppet) and scripting in Shell, Python or Ruby
  • Experience with networking technologies, such as switching, routing, multicast, TCP/IP, VLANs, OSPF, BGP
  • Basic understanding of NAS, SAN and distributed storage architectures such as Ceph
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills, clear judgement and critical thinking skills
  • Strong initiative, spots potential opportunities
  • Able to work on a range of diverse and stimulating projects, independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Committed to producing high quality work, with excellent attention to detail and strong documentation skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, able to communicate effectively with people of varying technical abilities
  • Strong academic background to degree-level with some SysAdmin experience (finance experience not necessary)
  • Knowledge of file systems and logical volume management such as LVM and ZFS 
  • Familiarity with analysis tools, e.g. iostat, strace, tcpdump 
  • Experience with VMware, KVM or other virtualisation technologies 
  • Experience with Microsoft Active Directory, LDAP and Kerberos 
  • Experience with PostgreSQL database administration 
  • Experience with Applications and tools such as apache, git, svn, rsyslog 
  • CCNA or CCNP qualification
