An opportunity exists for a highly motivated research and development technical staff member to serve as a cloud systems computer engineer and architect for a multidisciplinary team focused on delivering novel, high-impact information systems to internal and external customers. The successful candidate will employ systems-level thinking to plan and execute the implementation of solutions in the areas of cloud computing, security architecture, network engineering and software architecture. They will apply integrated technical judgment—which requires using the scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, to collect data through observation and experimentation, and to formulate and test hypotheses—to anticipate, innovate, and deliver solutions to Sandia National Laboratories missions.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Use engineering principles to research, design, or develop computer systems, theories, or technologies.
  • Research, prototype, architect, and design cloud computing based solutions for effective operation of mission enabling or direct mission information systems.
  • Remain current on cutting-edge technology and foster development of application to real-world problems.
  • Interface with the customer to elicit and define system requirements.
  • Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline plus 2 years of relevant technical experience.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure platforms, including technologies such as OpenStack or Amazon Web Services.
  • Experience creating and deploying secure architectures to meet cybersecurity and information assurance requirements.
  • Technical expertise in network engineering, storage engineering, and software architecture.
  • Experience with big data analytics.
  • History of successfully deploying information systems in a secure environment.
  • Experience with automation, orchestration, and continuous integration toolsets (puppet, docker, GitLab CI, etc.).
  • Object-oriented software development experience using Java, C++, web services, XML, or MVC design patterns.
  • Active DOE/DOD/SCI clearance.
  • Strong, demonstrated foundation in systems engineering and delivering complex software and hardware architectures for information processing systems.
