New York magazine is seeking a mid-level Systems Engineer with the knowledge and skills to work on award winning, high-profile websites including NYMag.com, Vulture.com, TheCut.com, and many more.
This job is not for the single minded. You get to play with all of our tech, from hardware to virtual instances, switches and routers to DNS, and web servers to the application stack itself.

- ElasticSearch and Apache Solr
- Nagios
- Maintain our network using Cisco, Brocade, and Dell devices, switches and routers.
- Spin up new and maintain instances and containers using AWS, Docker, and VMWare.
- Create and roll out configuration changes using Puppet.
- Maintain back end database systems across multiple environments.
- Ensure content delivery using various web servers, caches, and CDNs.
- Build CI deployment pipelines using Github, Jenkins, CircleCI, and AWS Code Deploy.
- Troubleshoot multiple application stacks using tools like curl, Charles, and Postman.
- Monitor the whole #!.
- Multiple years of Linux experience is a must.
- If you’re doing something more than once, you’d better be scripting it.
- Basic networking concepts including VLANS, tcp, and DNS.
- Experience working on highly available websites is a definite plus.
- Knowledge of as much of the above technologies the better, willingness to learn the rest is a must, offering and debating alternatives definitely works in your favor.
