We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, highly motivated DevOps Engineer to work at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. The successful candidate will join the Technology and Science Integration team (TSI) at EMBL-EBI which is responsible for bringing new technology into the EBI to improve the service provided to internal and external users and projects. The TSI team is supporting the transformation for the 600 developers, bioinformaticians and researchers at EMBL-EBI to deploy software and computational environments on our internal OpenStack cloud (6000+ cores) and public clouds (e.g. Google, Amazon & Azure) in an easier and more repeatable way for both our internal and external projects - such as ELIXIR a research infrastructure for life science. You will work as part of small group of DevOps engineers, who are jointly responsible for building and maintaining:

Desired Skills and Experience

  • A Continuous Integration and Deployment environment for cloud portable applications.
  • Development and testing of the Reference Data Set Distribution Service which is being developed with the support of EUDAT2020 project for the ELIXIR Compute Platform.
  • Maintenance of an Owncloud collaboration environment allowing staff, collaborators and external users to store data on EMBL-EBI resources.
  • Maintenance and support of GridFTP infrastructure used for data sharing across international institutions.
  • Maintenance of Gold Standard images used by staff and collaborators to build images in multiple cloud environments.
  • Experience in software development and in systems administration
  • Experience with automated deployment/configuration methods (e.g. Ansible, Puppet)
  • Experience in communicating and working with expert users (e.g. in a science community)
  • Previous experience deploying/integrating/supporting open source software
  • Familiarity with software development practices (i.e. a good knowledge of a variety of scripting/programming languages and version control systems)
  • Experience with large scale computing and storage infrastructures (e.g. HPC/HTC clusters)
  • Experience with VM and/or container deployment in public or private cloud environments
  • Experience with Shibboleth or other federated authentication systems
  • Experience with GridFTP, iRODs and other data transfer tools
  • Experience evaluating open-source software and its subsequent integration to a production system
