Senior Systems Administrator - Help us build a brand new team at Oliver Wyman Labs (Boston, MA)
OW Labs is the technical delivery arm of Oliver Wyman, an international management consultancy. We operate under the Oliver Wyman aegis with a distinct culture that gives us the space to emphasize what we as technically-oriented people think is important.
The Platform team in OW Labs build and maintain an agile, high-quality, highly secure infrastructure environment to host Oliver Wyman’s consulting projects and client-facing applications. We work in a close-knit group environment alongside other top-tier talent, in a remote-working team spread across Europe and North America.
The technology involved currently includes 4 physical data centres hosting 8 physical servers with ~150 CPUs, ~3TB RAM, and ~500TB of disk. We also have growing use of AWS hosted virtual machines in a hybrid cloud model. Our technology stack has been very Microsoft focused, but we’re increasingly adding open source technologies into the mix. We utilise Hyper-V in our physical data centres, running a mixture of Windows Server and Ubuntu Linux servers, we’re also big users of SQL Server.
The majority of our new projects are delivered using node.js, and many also utilize MongoDB, with some advanced analytics developed in Python. We’ve been using Chef Configuration Management for our Ubuntu Linux servers, and are starting to add this to our Windows servers. We’re also developing a Docker containers based approach for hosting applications in the future.
Daily duties include problem triage and troubleshooting, managing hardware issues, handling software updates and patching. In addition there are numerous projects to improve our environment in the areas of resiliency, security and automation.
