Desired Skills and Experience

  • You’ve got a commitment to uptime & reliability, but you know how to balance this with moving quickly. Thousands of teachers depend on Stile to run their classrooms, and you won’t let them down!
  • You’re a problem solver. When something’s slow, broken, or flaky, you use all the tools at your disposal to find out why and get it fixed.
  • You care about the overall result, and you can move across the stack & work with other teams to make sure stuff gets done.
  • You’ve spent some time as a software developer before. If you need to change how our application behaves to fix an availability issue, that’s no problem for you!
  • You understand the theory and practice of how high-availability systems stay up, and can get them built & deployed in the cloud.
  • AWS, including CloudFormation templates (other clouds are OK too though!)
  • Ruby or a similar language
  • Linux internals - a working knowledge is fine, you don’t need to be a kernel hacker.
  • Docker (we use it for just about everything)
  • You’ll keep our technology stack ahead of our user growth! This means solving scaling problems as they come up, as well as designing & running load tests to predict where the next bottleneck will be.
  • You’ll support our top-notch development team as they work on the product. This includes maintaining & improving our CI & deployment systems so ensure they can get their code out fast, as well as providing advice & guidance on infrastructure matters.
  • You’ll keep an eye out for things we’re spending too much manual effort on, and automate them instead. This will include some scripting, as well as building out self-service tools for others when appropriate.
  • A friendly, fun and reasonably informal team environment.
  • A modern office in the heart of Abbotsford. Fully stocked kitchen, relaxation areas, and even an old school arcade machine.
  • A commitment to training and self-improvement. All staff at Stile are actively encouraged to attend and speak at conferences and meet ups.
  • Flexibility with leave and with working hours.
  • Generous salary commensurate with your ability and experience.
