  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of one or more supported technologies including: network routing and switching technologies; network carrier services and technologies; WAN, LAN and SAN internetworking; wireless network technologies including WiFi, cellular, and satellite; server and storage virtualization technologies including load balancing; multimedia network applications such as voice and video; firewall, session border controller and other security technologies; and, remote access control technologies.
  • Extensive knowledge of network design and configuration.
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of capacity planning methods in a network infrastructure environment.
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of infrastructure architecture principles and frameworks.
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of one or more infrastructure technologies such as database, network, security, server, storage, and workstations.
  • Provides third level support. Troubleshoots complex operational problems and assists technologists who are less experienced in a specific technology resolve problems.
  • Escalates problems to external vendors as necessary, ensuring prompt and accurate resolution.
  • Develops and continually improves procedures, standards and methods for team members and other I/S colleagues.
  • Evaluates the operational characteristics and usage trends of the network infrastructure and components by utilizing available tools to monitor and manage reliability, availability and performance. Works with those that support client applications to identify and resolve issues to maintain operating efficiency and work quality.
  • Builds understanding of network infrastructure technologies within the organization through the creation of self-service options.
  • Shares knowledge and mentors/assists team members and other peers who are less experienced or knowledgeable in a specific technology.
  • Participates in developing the architecture for individual projects related to network infrastructure technologies and services. Uses frameworks developed by enterprise architecture and ensures that business solutions support enterprise architecture strategies.
  • Leads and direct others in the overall administration of a specialized technology.
  • Leads network hardware and software solution installation, configuration, and maintenance following established procedures and change control standards.
  • Conducts vendor business interactions such as reviewing quotes, overseeing support or maintenance issues, etc.
  • Performs post-installation verification.
  • Diagnoses and fixes the most complex system problems.
  • Performs on-going capacity planning for network infrastructure technologies to provide assurance of proper system operation and performance as well as input to software and hardware lifecycle management.
  • Develops and continually improves procedures and documentation.
  • Works with other divisions to assist with accomplishing their business objectives (i.e. Sourcing and Procurement, Finance, Call Centers, Educations, etc.) ; shares knowledge of potential business impacts of infrastructure to critical business functions such as asset management, budgets, taxes, etc.
  • Maintains up-to-date awareness of industry developments and best practices in technologies, tools, software engineering processes, and I/S applications related to area of specialization.
  • Leads the analysis and assessment of new network technologies, conducting vendor reviews and producing Requests for Information and Requests for Proposal as appropriate. Provides recommendations for investment in new products, which may include cost/benefit analysis.
  • Manages vendor relationships on an ongoing basis, ensuring that American Family’s interests are effectively represented and the organization has access to information on new developments in technology.
  • Creates reports and presentations for peer and management review and consumption.
  • Provides input to strategic architecture planning as is related to network infrastructure solutions and services. Works with the infrastructure technology architects to validate integration capabilities and consistency with other infrastructure technology solutions as well as future infrastructure technology directions.
  • Partners with clients, consultants, applications technologists, external stakeholders, and other I/S domains to understand business and systems requirements and proactively identify network technology systems needed to support the business.
  • Provides coordination of efforts across I/S and business areas for projects and day-to-day operations. Builds relationships with customers outside of I/S.
  • Manages own tasks within a project plan using I/S standard Infrastructure methodologies (SDLC).
  • Manages medium to large size projects, or complex parts of a project, holding others accountable to delivery deadlines and quality.
  • Complies with best practices that have been established for I/S projects at American Family.
  • Participates in or leads post-implementation reviews to identify opportunities to continually improve processes.
